Mobile Eye Clinic
Dear Parent/Guardian,

MEC is an initiative of the Canadian Council of the Blind in conjunction with local Lions clubs, which brings a licensed optometrist to schools to perform Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP) covered comprehensive eye exams for children and dispense glasses (frame and lenses) for free where applicable.  The program will be offered at Cambridge School for students who have not had an eye exam in the last 12 months.

Children 19 years of age or younger are covered by OHIP for ONLY one (1) comprehensive eye exam per year.

All children need regular comprehensive eye examinations to determine if they have healthy eyes and optimal vision. Statistics show that at least 1 in 6 children have a vision problem, which in most cases would otherwise go undetected. For more on our clinic, please visit

If your child has regular eye exams with an optometrist, please call your optometrist’s office to book his/her yearly appointment. Please note that all children are eligible for an eye exam as long as they have not received an eye exam with an optometrist in the last 12 months.

If you would like your child to participate in MEC please complete the attached form and return to school by January 22, 2019.

An eye examination will be conducted by a licensed optometrist and will include an assessment of the following:

  • Visual acuity
  • Eye coordination and tracking
  • Depth perception
  • Colour vision
  • Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
  • Eye health

The optometrist may be required to administer dilating eye drops to better examine your child’s eyes. These drops will temporarily enlarge the pupil, may increase light sensitivity and blur near vision for 6-12 hours. Your child’s teacher will be informed if drops were used. You may wish to send your child home following the exam, however, this is not necessary.

If you would like to be present for your child’s eye exam at his/her school, please call Monica at (613) 567-0311 to arrange this.

Within one week of your child’s eye exam you will receive a letter from the optometrist indicating whether the results of the eye exam were normal or if a vision-related problem was identified.  If necessary, you will be given a prescription for glasses and/or you will be advised that a follow up appointment is required.
